What to look for in a wedding photographer

I've been asked a few times what I tell a potential wedding client when they ask whats the difference between me and another photographer. I always tell them to first look at our work. The difference start there. The style, posing, lighting and image editing should give clients a good idea of what their pictures will look like. But that is just the start of what makes me different from other photographers and them from me.

The next important difference is what the wedding clients will be able to purchase. I break my wedding coverage into 3 different packages (for pricing info please fell free to contact me). The packages differ in coverage time, number of wedding albums and prints. My number 1 product is my wedding albums. I think it's very important to give my clients the best product possible. When I shoot a wedding I always have the wedding album in mind. Most photographers offer wedding albums but our packages differ so it's best to shop around.

There are photographers who only offer your images on CD. You take it from there and get your own pictures made and make your own albums. They usually are cheaper then other photographers (including me) and most people end up with a CD, maybe a few prints and no album.

Also personality is very important. Remember we are going to spend a day together. I thinks it's important that we can get along. When you contact me about shooting your wedding I am also deciding if we will be a good match. In the past I have passed on wedding clients because I didn't think we were a good match or they were wanting things I didn't offer. I do refer them to other photographers that could help them better then I can.

So you want to shoot weddings?

I have never had to experience an unhappy bride, groom or family (fingers crossed) and hope I never will. Never had a Groomzilla like this.

I make sure I have covered everything with the couple so they know what to expect and know what they are receiving. That's why I think it's so important when I meet a couple I need to determine if we will be a good fit. Yes I also am picking you. I want to be able to work with you. Usually if I don't think we are a good match I will refer the couple to another photographer who may match their needs better. More on that in a later post.

I just wanted to post this story as a reminder for myself and other wedding photographers to make sure your couples know what they are getting and what to expect. Shooting weddings is not for the faint of heart.

Going into 2008 business was good and growing. As that year started business slowed down. It went from noticeable to alarming. I wasn't blind to the fact that the economy was also slowing down and many businesses were hurting. I decided the best thing for me and my business was to make a few changes as cost saving measures. Most changes came with production (less outsourcing) and stopped offering low selling products.

I didn't panic and change my prices because my quality didn't decline. Matter of fact my quality has continued to improve each year. I take a lot of pride in my work and only offer my clients the best possible products and service.

After a couple of shaky years business started to pick up. I am very grateful to my existing clients who stuck with and trusted Gonzales Photography through those years. I am also thankful to my new clients I started working with these past few years. You guys have been the best and I've enjoy working with all of you. I look forward to hearing from you guys on Facebook, Twitter, blog, e-mail, phone calls or in person. Don't ever hesatate to say "Hi" or let me know how the family is doing.

I recently had a phone call from a former client. PJ was one of my very first high school seniors that I worked with. This was back in 2001 or 2002. We did the normal and safe pictures first. Then we decided to take some risk. PJ had the idea for this picture. There was a small wall so I had him stand on it and I was laying on the ground. Oh...and I was shooting film back in those days. I didn't convert to digital until 2004. I still like this picture but If I had to do it again I would of not had the tree in the back ground.
Anyway, PJ is 28 and engaged. Now I feel old:) Congratulations and good luck PJ.

Off Camera Flash

Here is an example of off camera flash that I do and why I am such a huge fan of it. Both pictures were done at the same time just a little different angel but that has no effect other then a different background. Notice in the "No Flash" picture the background is lighter, their skin is darker under their eyes and it just lacks a kick. Natural light pictures are fine and I do shoot a lot of them but you have to plan to get a good shot. With natural light pictures you need a reflector to kick some lights into their eyes and also, for best results, find open shade.
These shots were done at high noon which is not the best time to get pictures done. But as a wedding photographer most of the time we shoot when the sun is at it's highest point which leads to "raccoon eyes" and hard shadows. That's why I love off camera lighting. I'm able to deal with these obstacles.
My off camera setup I used is a Canon 430 Speedlight, softbox and light stand. Since it was high noon the flash was set at full power. It was triggered with my Elinchrom Skyport wireless system (love it and very dependable system). As you can see in the diagram, the setup was very standard. The sun was behind my subjects which acted as a kicker light to help separate them from the background. The flash was camera left and very close to the subjects just out of camera view.

High School Session

Courtney and Chad are very active high schoolers, if you haven't noticed. But they were able to find some free time during spring break to get some pictures done for their parents.

All pictures were done using off-camera flash. I will post some side by side comparisons to show how off-camera flash can improve outdoors pictures later in the week.

Someone Say "Snow"

Living in Colorado guaranties one thing...It will snow. At times the snow will fall but it will warm up and the snow will melt. What we have been dealing with in the past few weeks is one snow storms after another dumping large amounts of snow before the last snow fall had a chance to melt. Just life in Colorado...But its what I love about this state.
The storms have interfered with a few outdoor portraits that I had planned, which have since been rescheduled. Tomorrow we will be getting our next snow storm which may turn into a blizzard. Fun huh? But this weekend looks to be very nice with temps in the high 50's. Definitely picture weather.

Every year at this time I look at the past year's goals to see what ones where achieved, what ones I'm still working on and what ones just didn't work. I always try to learn from the past year. Always looking to improve my business, my photography, my customer service, my client's experience and my products. This leads to evaluating what should change and what should remain the same. Did I meet my 2010 goals- why or why not? What goals carry over, what one's get modified or overhauled. What new goals do I set for the new year.
Achieving my set goals and setting new one's always drives me to work harder and smarter.

So I have some goals that will remain the same, a few goals that will be modified and new goals to achieve in 2011. Last year was a good year for Gonzales Photography but I can always do better. I am really excited for the new year and working to achieve my goals. I believe that 2011 will be a better and more productive year.

2 Light Testing

I recently was practicing using two lights for a portrait. Both lights are Speedlites used off camera with the Elinchrom Skyport Wireless transmitter and receivers. The Key light is to camera left (subjects right). The flash is shooting through a umbrella. The kicker flash is bare and has a red gel over it.

The first image only the key flash is being used. Notice how my head blends in with the background. The Key flash is at 1/2 power.

Now both flashes are being fired. The kicker light is at 1/4 power. The reason I have it at a lower power, for one it works, but I was getting too much red light bouncing around and it was falling more on my face. If you notice my ears and cheeks have a touch of red to them. The light does a better job of separating me from the background.

And finally the image I liked the best. My son did bring it to my attention that I have a serious look on my face. He thinks I should have smiled. Next time..

Fantasy Football: Hammer Heads

A final update about my fantasy football team. As you may know, or may not know, my team played in the championship game this past weekend for the second year in a row. And for the second year in a row I lost. I had a lot of fun playing this year and I think I may spend too much time researching players but it's all in good fun. Now I can have my life back. And I promise I was not checking my fantasy points during your wedding.

Hammer Heads have won their second round playoff game and are now in the championship. This is the second year in a row that the Hammer Heads will be playing in the Fantasy Bowl. Last year we lost and took second place in the league. Hopefully this year it will be different. Like last week "Game Time!!!"

Do you do bridal sessions?

Yes I do. Bridal sessions are my favorite sessions to do. For one I'll be working with someone who wants to get some great images. Both our creative juices are flowing. And working with brides during the session they are more open to trying some different things. I do like to show the bride during our photo shoot some of the images on the back of my camera. They get very excited and more comfortable but nothing replaces when they see a big print. That blows their mind. Fun stuff.

What product are you most proud of?

I am very proud of all products that come out of my studio. All my products are very high quality. But If I had to pick one It would be a very easy pick for me. My albums are what I am very proud of. I do all the album development for each client. Which means each clients gets a one of kind album. Each album is very unique even though they are all the same flush mount album but each pages is very unique to their story. All my other products are outsourced (prints, DVD, wall mounts) but I really want to develop my own albums. It does take a lot of time working on an album but the clients reaction is priceless.

Do you book with ever bride and groom who contacts you?

No. When someone contacts me looking to book their wedding I first need to know the date of their wedding to see if I'm available. When consulting with a possible client we are both in the feel out mode. I only do a limited amount of weddings a year so I am selective. I want the couple to feel comfortable with me and trust that I will get the job done. I want to feel like I can work with the couple and I also want to feel comfortable with them. Remember I will be with you all day so it only makes sense we enjoy each others company.

Fantasy Football: Hammer Heads Regular Season Results

If you remember my post back in August regarding my fantasy football team. It talked about me getting ready for the draft and what I was researching. I ended up drafting a very productive team. I did have to make some additions during the year but the core team remained the same.
The Hammer Heads barely made the playoffs with the 8th seed. Only 8 teams make the playoffs each year. The thing that makes it a productive team is my total points scored for the year. I lead the league in total points scored. Which means a $$$ bonus for the year. Now the big money is in the playoffs which start tomorrow.

Textured Images

I don't think I have ever posted a picture that I have added texture to on the website, blog, Facebook or Twitter. But I usually add texture to a few pictures that I think look better with them and add them to the clients proofs for viewing. Since they are proofs if the client doesn't like them they don't have to order them and it cost them nothing. It's just a different looking picture. Recently I have received great response from my clients and noticed that they have been ordering more textured images.
I was having a conversation with a bride-to-be who wanted me to know that she had seen some of my textured images and made it clear that she expects to have a lot of her images edited this was. That's not a problem at all.
Here is a image I pulled off my Facebook page and added texture to it. Same picture, different look. The texture is old dry paint.

A lot of luck comes from being prepared and planning. This picture was shot at the Rider Cup. For those who don't know what that is, the Rider Cup is a golf tournament played between USA vs. European players. Basically the best golfers in the world. One photographer was following Tiger Woods during his round. The photographer positioned himself on the side of Tiger wanting to get an image of him hitting the ball. It just so happened that Tiger miss hit the ball at the same time the photographer snapped the picture.
All sports photogrhers that take pictures of sporting events that use a ball always (most always) want to get the action and the ball in the same picture. I think he did just that. He was prepared to take his shot and luck came walking by.

Fantasy Football: Hammer Heads

Yes today is the big day. My fantasy football draft. Last year the Hammer Heads (team name) made it to the championship game but lost. That just means this is our year (I say that every year). I have been doing my research and feel I'm ready. I guess I have to be ready, the draft will happen with or without me.

Potential clients have a lot of questions when they first make contact and I have noticed that sometimes the same questions do come up. That's the reason for this post. In future F.A.Q. post it will only be one question at a time. But this time I will answer a few more questions to start.

Do you shoot weddings?

Yes. I, Patrick Gonzales, from Gonzales Photography do in fact shoot weddings. If you look at my website you will be able to see some of my work.

What city are you located in and are you willing to travel?

Gonzales Photography is based in Pueblo, Colorado but open to shoot worldwide. Or where ever you decide to get married.

How many wedding packages do you offer and what is the cost?

I offer three different packages which differ in the amount of shooting time and products. If you call or e-mail Gonzales Photography I can send you the price list. Then we can see which package best fits your taste and budget.

e-Session

I've been asked a few times what is an e-Session? It's an engagement session. Ideally most e-Sessions are done about three months before the wedding depending on the weather. This way you are able to receive your albums and pictures before the wedding. And your family has had time to view your images. At a location of your choice. Most of the time it's a location that means a lot to the couple. But you book your session when ever it fits your schedule. I have done an e-Session one week before the wedding which worked fine. I do like doing the e-Session because it gets the couple use to the way I'll be shooting on their wedding day and we get to know each other better. Which only makes for better wedding pictures.

You don't have to be engaged for an e-Session. I have had couples who are only dating but wanting the e-Session package which is fine with me.

A wedding at T.J. Maxx? Really? I thinks it's awesome when couples make their weddings unique. They do it by wardrobe, food, location, dancing, music, etc.. But getting married in a discount store? Now if your name is T.J. and you belong to the Maxx family I would understand.
Just to be clear if you getting married and Gonzales Photography will be shooting your wedding it doesn't matter where it happens. You will get awesome images and a kick-ass album.

Self-Portrait

I recently had the pleasure of shooting a session at sunrise. In preparing for the shoot I decided to do a practice shoot. I was wanting to have a run through so I would have some idea what to expect. The main thing I was looking for and expecting was the constant change in light. With the sun coming up the light reading would change pretty fast. When I shoot during the day or even closer to sunset the light is more consistent.
Now the hard part is convincing someone to get up @ 5 in the morning, deal with the mosquitoes and appear to be wide awake and happy. Well...I was not able to convince anyone so I had to set up and be my own model. The added bonus is I have been wanting to get new pictures for my website, blog, facebook and twitter profiles. This did come with a few obstacles. I would have to use a tripod and the camera timer. I would have to use trial and error when composing. I also decided to video record just for the fun of it. I am not looking to get into doing video. Even though it is fun to do the editing is something I just don't have the patience for. But for a quick and simple Behind The Scenes video it was fun.

Foot Note: I am a morning person so it wasn't too hard getting up or to appear happy.

If you have checked out the website recently you may have noticed some changes to the different galleries. They use to be 8 to 12 images which could be clicked on and enlarged. The problem with that was each gallery only had a few images and you would hit a dead end and would have to click the Back button to get out.
Now I decided to make one picture with many images. This gives clients a better feel for how and what I shoot. I was worried that the images would be too small to see all the details but I think they came out very good. I am very pleased with the overall out come of the galleries and website.

Sissy Lee Gonzales

On Monday 7/19/10 we had to say goodbye to member of our family. Sissy (our pet cat), better known to everyone who knew her as Sisser, was put to sleep due to feline diabetes at the age of (human) 9 years, (cat) 63 years old. I did not know cats could get diabetes but as the vet informed me it is more common then you think.
Sisser ended her life as she started it, as a loving cat who liked to be petted. It was the the 6 1/2 years in between that people have heard stories about. For the first 6 months of Sisser's life she was a very playful kitten. She had a tigger doll that she would fight with and she would always want to play with, our other older cat, Chrissy (named for Chrissy Snow on Three's Company and the best cat in the world). Then at 6 months Sisser was spayed and a new Sisser came out to play.
Now remember I love my Sisser but from that point on, until about a few years ago, she was a BITCH. Very mean to anyone she knew. She was scared of everything, noises, the doorbell, strangers, the outside world, birds, bugs, anything and everything. What she was not afraid of was her family. She would attack for no reason. You could be walking down the hall, or into a bedroom and she would attack you, not in a playful way, but wanting and most times drawing blood. We learned to deal with her anger outburst. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get her into anger management but she refused. You would walk into a room and you would hear a cat growling. That's when you had to be ready because she might attack.
Over the years we had the "Sisser Rules". Rule #1. No one talks about the Sisser Rules, #2. only pet her if she comes to you and rubs on you first, #3. only pet her head (she hated to be petted on her back) and #4. don't and I repeat DON'T put your face close to her. Rule number four was broke by me many times and I would wear the marks of Sisser. Needless to say we never became close to Sisser due to her anger. But she was our pet and a part of the family and you don't get ride of family. She was able be nice, But....you always had to have your guard up.
Then about 2 years ago Sisser started to sleep in our beds without incident. Her and Crissy got along better (Chrissy was the alpha cat). You could actually pet Sisser and she would sit next to you without growling the whole time. Everything was good most of the time, the anger would still come out be at lesser frequencies. About 8 months after Sisser's big change Chrissy passed away and Sisser became the only cat in the house. This is the time we all became closer to Sisser. She was around us more, she would hangout with the boys as they played video games or watched TV. She would go outside and hangout on the patio (but the sliding door had to remain open at all times). She would follow everyone around and rub on our legs. She would greet us as we walked in the door or come when she was called.
About three months ago I noticed that she stopped eating for a few days and spent most of the time sleeping. I figured that she had a cold or just didn't feel good. After those few days she seemed fine again but was eating more. As time went on she also started drinking more water. Of course I noticed the amount of waste in her litter box had increased to a crazy amount. She also started to lose weight (a lot of weight) and was sleeping more then normal. That's when she was discovered to have diabetes.
A lot of people wondered why we kept her for all those years but for us we are very happy that she became a part of our family. For the most part she was a good, mean, cat.

Black & White Prints

When I shoot and edit I work in color or for a color print outcome. There are times when I will be shooting with the end goal being a black and white print. As my past clients know on the store front (were you place orders) you are able to see an image in black & white and/or sepia. So any print the client wants in black & white can easily be converted. Sometimes a client will order a print in black & white and I will be surprised. Not because they ordered a print but that they wanted a very colorful print in black & white. Take for example the the image above. As a color print it works for me. Everything I look for in a print.

This print was ordered in color but also the client ordered it as a black & white print. When I converted the print to black & white and placed the order I still liked the color version better. When the 11"x14" print (below) showed up I was very surprised how good it looked. The picture is a very good color print but as a black & white print it blew me away. Maybe it's one of those times when the customer is right. But it did help me remember the power of black & white images.

It's Not The Camera It's How You Use It

Lee Morris from Fstoppers did a fashion photo shoot with his iPhone. And he recorded it for our viewing. It's really cool and it shows that it's not the camera you are using but you need to know what you are doing to get quality images.

New Logo

This is what I've been working on recently. I decided to re-do my logo, making it less colorful but more personal. I have had my previous logo since 2001. I also like having the background white, seems cleaner. And the pictures stand out better. The blog matches the website now. I use to like to have the two appear different so readers knew they were not on the website anymore. But now that doesn't seem so important.
The website will be changing over so there may be some problems viewing it. Hopefully any problems are very minimum but if you are having problems please let me know.

The bridal fair was fun but not well attended. I don't know if it was the weather or what. But I had a great time talking to the brides that did show up and of course talking to all the other wedding vendors.

High contrast black & whites

I love color pictures and when I'm shooting I visualize the final picture in color but I do like to throw in black & white pictures. B&W pictures always remind me of developing images in my high school darkroom. I have to admit that I loved the way the chemicals smelled. Digital has all but changed that. Now my darkroom is my desktop and laptop computers.

Here is a quick before and after post. I try to limit my post production but I do like to to push the limits on some images. I do have the normal edited image along with the more edgy one.

1st image. Resized, sharped and vignette.

2nd image. Same as above with a high contrast filter added.

I love the way the colors pop on this picture. I came across this when I was messing around with photoshop. I was working on high contrast black & white, which I will post a sample of that sometime this week.

It's the slow time of year and a good time to get caught up on everything. There are somethings in the works which I was hopeful I would be able to make an announcement sooner then later but it looks like later. Once there ready you'll be the first to know.

Do It Yourself: Flash Card

As photographers we have to work with light. Like many photographers I have a lot of flash modifiers. Some spreed the light, some bounce the light, some hide the light. Every time I shoot a wedding in places that are lacking light and have high ceilings I always wish I had a flash card in my tool kit. So...having some free time I decided to attempt to make a flash card. For the record a flash card is used when you bounce light but still want some directional light to open shadows.

I found a foam visor at Walmart for $1. Ordered a LumiQuest velcro strap. The tools I used were a ruler, velcro strips and x-acto knife.

Next measure and cut the foam visor to fit the flash. Then add the velcro strips. They are self adhesive on the back. They didn't stick very well so I ended up using staples which held better.

When the flash foam is attached to the camera it looks like this. This makes it easier to direct the light.

Now for the test. The top picture is direct flash. Noticed the hard shadow behind the model (Dylan). Not good, I try never to have strait on flash, ever.

The middle picture is the flash bounced off the ceiling which I do like and use. But usually no catch light in the eyes and notice the shadows on the face from his glasses.

The flash foam bottom picture. The light was bounced off the ceiling (softer shadow behind him) and the flash foam is shooting a little direct light (notice the reflection on his glasses). I like that look and the colors look better to me.

The flash foam will be easy to store and is kinda cool if I say so myself. Now I can't wait for my next wedding to bust out the DIY flash foam.

I noticed on Twitter today everyone is posting what they were doing 10 years ago. It got me thinking. And when I get thinking I usually need a nap. But after my nap I relized that I now nap more. 10 years ago I had more hair, I had no kids, I traveled more. 10 years ago my goal was to make it to the weekend, I ate out more. 10 years ago I didn't carry around a cell phone, If you were trying to get a hold of me you had to call my house and leave a message on my answering machine (remember those? you memberrrr...). Caller ID was something new and cool. Remember answering the phone by saying that person's name? Now I feel naked without my cell phone. And the internet...how that has changed. 10 years ago I had a dial up connection which took forever and there was nothing too great about the internet. Today I'm usually on the net on a daily basis checking e-mail, surfing or shopping. Everyone was worried about the Y2K bug...how everything was going to mess up. New Years Eve 1999 me and some friends were in Denver, Co. having a blast. There were riot police everywhere that night but nothing happened besides too much drinking and a killer hangover for the first day of 2000.
The past 10 years a lot has changed. I can now pause and rewind live TV. Now if they can just find a way to fast forward live TV that would be cool. The past 10 years have seen a lot of changes but the best thing that happened was becoming a father. A hard job but one I love everyday.

End of the Year Already?

I hope everyone is having a good time during the holidays. I've been trying to get caught up on somethings and get ready for 2010. Can you believe the year is over all ready? I think we say that at the end of each year.

I do have a few changes coming in the new year which will be announced at the appropriate times. One I can share now is trying to blog more. When I started my blog I wanted to post on a daily basis. Didn't work. Then I wanted to post a few times a week. Didn't work. Post randomly! Finally something I can do. I'm going to try and post more and on a regular schedule. So check the blog for new post.

Also, fan appreciation time is coming up for all Facebook fans. Remember all Facebook fans can get a FREE picture done by me for their Facebook profile.

Yes I do have a Frank Sinatra Theme. The Little Sinatra figure sings a Christmas song. Do you like the mood lighting on Frank? I expose for the tree, which I keep out of focus, and use a flash light to light the figure.

Canon vs. Nikon

Did you ever wonder what would happen if a guy who shoots with Canon cameras met a girl who shoots with Nikon cameras? Me 'nether...but someone has and they made a video.

The rapper/singer in the video is photographer JoeyL. He is the photographer who shot the first Twilight Movie Posters.

Regarding the Canon/ Nikon thing. I shoot with Canon cameras. My first SRL was a Canon and been using them ever since.

Practice Your Skills

The key to being successful is practice your skills. It doesn't matter whether your a doctor or a fisherman. To be a successful fisherman, you have to go fishing every day. In medicine it's the same. I still see patients and read four medical journals a week-otherwise I would lose my skill and relevance. You have to put in hours and hours, or you get nowhere in life. People have this vision that they will work hard and then get to lie on the beach. That's not how success happens. You work, and you keep working. The trick is to make work creative so it becomes like play.

I'm a fan of all types of photography and always trying to learn more. One of the things about photography is it can make pest look cool. Thomas Shahan a nature photographer specializes in amazing portraits of tiny insects does some very cool work. Here is his FLICKR page. I don't think I will be chasing bugs around trying to get a portrait in the near future. But the detail and color of his images rock. Imaging a Horse Fly looking interesting. Here is a video from the Today Show this morning. Also some of Thomas' work.

Always Learning

One great thing about photography is you never know it all and probably never will. But I do enjoy learning new skills. That's why i love attending workshops and conferences when I can. I usually take from them new ideas which I work on when I have free time. Once I'm comfortable with my new skill I do like to use it during a session and/or wedding.

I usually use ambient light most of the time. I would try to stay away from on camera flash as much as I could. But at receptions flash is usually needed. I try to bounce the flash off the wall ceiling, my shirt. Anything to avoid straight flash. I own many flash modifiers and use them still. I like some more then others.

Then in 2007 I discovered Strobist way of lighting. Using your flash units as off camera lights. Like I would with my studio strobes. Getting the flash off camera is what I have been trying to do all along. By bouncing the light I'm trying to make it look like the light is coming from another angle. It's a work in progress and the skies the limit. My camera bags are lighter these days. I use this method for seniors, engagement shoots and weddings.

Practicing is always fun but sometimes hard to find a model. My sons have always been my stand in models but now when they see me setting something up they disappear. Plus they are only good for a few frames before they want to take off. So finding a model that will stay as long as I need and will not fuss is what I'm always looking for. Sometimes objects are the best models.

Meet Mr. Trash Can. This is the final image. The flash is camera left and sunlight from camera right.

A little wider view. The flash is a little hot but I was trying for that look. When I'm in a setup like this I'll have an image in my head and adjust the camera to try to match. Very good exercise to do so when your with a client and talk about an idea you'll have confidence that you can make an image work.

Here is a shot of the setup. The flash was side lighting the trash can on all images.

All images were done in the privacy of my backyard. I would hate for my neighbors to think I'm strange for taking pictures of trash cans.
